Some Cool Monkeys

Mr Monkey

"Who is he? The Ball of Energy
Special skills: Jumping, running and leaping

Mr Monkey is a hybrid-breed capuchin monkey rescued by the Monkey Sanctuary

Mr Monkey is very intelligent and has some unusual stereotypical behaviours after living an under-stimulated life as a pet. If he feels nervous or disturbed in any way, then he will often 'self-grasp' , an action that looks somewhat like he is hugging himself. Mr Monkey also over-grooms if he has a difficult day, often pulling out whole sections of hair on his toes. Although he is still troubled by these stereotypical behaviours, he leads an active social life at the Monkey Sanctuary and has improved in so many ways since his arrival! He is a resilient character who is determined to overcome his past."

Charlie Brown

"Who is he? The Friendly Boy

Specials skills: Being super-friendly and teaching new arrivals how to play!

Charlie Brown's history is largely unknown, but we do know that at some point he was kept as a pet. As with most pet monkeys, it is highly likely that he was bred for the pet trade and sold as a tiny baby, having been forcibly removed from his mother as young as a few days old. On arrival here he appeared to be a healthy young monkey with lustrous fur and high energy levels, but his psychological state gives clues that his previous life was not a happy one. He is known to pace and twist his head when he is stressed; abnormal behaviors often seen in animals that have been kept in poor captive conditions. Thankfully, Charlie now enjoys natural, spacious enclosures and lives with friends in a social group who help him forget his past. Despite his traumatic history, he has an incredibly gentle and kind character, so is often chosen to help new monkeys learn how to socialize in a safe environment. He just loves meeting new arrivals and teaching them how to play!"

Lily

"Who is she? The Cheeky Child

Special skills: Making everyone fall in love with her!

At 22 years old, her mother, a woolly monkey named Maya was quite elderly when she gave birth to Lily, but she did a fantastic job of caring for her and the rest of the woolly monkey colony was besotted from the moment she arrived. Sadly, Maya passed away due to old age related health-problems when Lily was just 16 months old, but happily all of the males wanted to care for and protect her.

Lily is still learning everything she needs to know about growing up as a woolly monkey and it is great to see her benefitting from a social group, unlike some of our rescued monkeys who have been deprived of this, having being kept as pets. Like her mother before her, Lily is rather spoilt by the other monkeys and her human carers alike! Her favourite activities are swinging around exploring her enclosures and pestering Pablo for a good tickling game!"
